Porsche problems tend to be predictable once you know the model and the mileage. We know where these cars actually fail — and we diagnose before we touch anything, on 911, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, and Panamera.
Issue 1 — IMS Bearing Concerns (996/997, Boxster, Cayman)
SYMPTOM: An oil leak near the rear of the engine, or metal debris found in an oil analysis.
WHY IT HAPPENS: On water-cooled 911, Boxster, and Cayman models built roughly 1997–2008, the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing can wear and fail — in rare cases catastrophically. An oil leak in this area doesn't always mean IMS failure, but it's worth ruling out.
HOW WE HANDLE IT: We inspect for the actual source of any leak in this area and tell you honestly whether IMS risk applies to your specific model and year.
Issue 2 — Rear Main Seal Leak
SYMPTOM: Oil spots under the engine, an oil odor, or clutch slippage on manual cars.
WHY IT HAPPENS: The rear main seal wears with age and mileage, commonly showing up in the 40,000–60,000-mile range, and is often addressed alongside other rear-engine work.
HOW WE HANDLE IT: We confirm the seal is the actual source before recommending repair, since other leaks in the same area can look similar.
Issue 3 — Coolant Leak / Cooling System Failure
SYMPTOM: Coolant smell, overheating, or a puddle under the car.
WHY IT HAPPENS: Cooling components — water pumps, radiators, and coolant lines — wear over time across the lineup. Early Cayenne and Panamera models specifically used plastic coolant pipes that crack and fail with age.
HOW WE HANDLE IT: We inspect the full cooling system and identify the actual source before recommending a repair or a permanent aluminum pipe retrofit where applicable.
Issue 4 — Suspension Wear
SYMPTOM: A rough ride, clunking over bumps, or the car sitting unevenly.
WHY IT HAPPENS: Control arms, bushings, ball joints, sway bar links, wheel bearings, and CV axles wear across the Porsche lineup. Models with active or air suspension add electronic and pneumatic components that can fail alongside the mechanical ones.
HOW WE HANDLE IT: We inspect the full suspension and driveline system before recommending repair, including control arms, bushings, wheel bearings, CV axles and related components. We also perform coilover installation and suspension upgrades when requested.
Issue 5 — Drivability Issue / Second Opinion
SYMPTOM: A drivability issue — hesitation, noise, or reduced power — especially after another shop has already looked at it.
WHY IT HAPPENS: Drivability problems can come from the engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, or even something as simple as loose axle hardware. We've seen cases where a major repair was recommended before the actual cause was properly confirmed.
HOW WE HANDLE IT: We run our own independent diagnostics before agreeing with — or ruling out — a prior diagnosis.
Issue 6 — PDK / Transmission Problems
SYMPTOM: Rough or delayed shifting, hesitation, transmission warning messages, unusual behavior between gears, or reduced drivability.
WHY IT HAPPENS: Porsche PDK and automatic transmission concerns can involve fluid condition, electronic controls, adaptations, sensors, mechatronic components, or internal transmission problems.
HOW WE HANDLE IT: We diagnose the transmission before recommending repair, using fault data, live data and system testing to determine whether the issue requires service, adaptation, electronic repair, or mechanical work.
