A CAR FAILS EMISSIONS
Emissions testing checks two things:
is your Check Engine light on, and have your car's own self-checks finished running. If the light is on for any reason, it's an automatic fail — regardless of how the car drives.
Failing oxygen sensor
Catalytic converter damage
EVAP system leak
Misfire
Sensor reading out of range
The same fault can come from more than one of these.
A code alone doesn't tell you which —
that takes an actual diagnosis.
DIAGNOSIS BEFORE REPAIR —
THEN THE PAPERWORK
Bring us your Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR). We run a full diagnostic — computer, mechanical, and tool-assisted where needed — to find the actual cause behind the fault, not just clear the code.
Once repaired, we complete the Repair Data Form (RDF) required for your retest. Illinois also offers a repair-cost waiver if a vehicle still fails after documented, qualifying repairs — we'll tell you if that applies to your situation.
You can't renew your registration without a passing test. And the same fault causing the emissions failure is often already affecting fuel economy or drivability — waiting usually means a bigger repair later, not a smaller one.
